We’re Kim and Dave, and the main reason we wanted to build an ADU was for my parents. They were living in a two-story home with 18 stairs, and as they’ve gotten older, those stairs have become more difficult. We wanted to give them a comfortable, single-story home where they could be close to us and not have to worry about climbing stairs every day.

I had wanted my parents to live with us for probably about ten years, but I didn’t see how it was going to happen.

Our property also presented a challenge. We have a pool that takes up a large portion of the backyard, and other companies had suggested we might need to fill it in to make an ADU work. Backyard Estates understood the rules and showed us how we could fit a sizable ADU in an area we would never have considered. That expertise allowed us to keep our pool while still creating the home we wanted for my parents.

Once construction began, everything moved incredibly quickly. Within a week, they had broken ground, laid the foundation, and put up the framing. Suddenly, something we had imagined for years was standing right in front of us. From there, it felt like everything just went “boom, boom, boom.”
