We decided to build an ADU because we wanted the best of both worlds: to stay close to our children and grandchildren while still having our own private space. As we’ve gotten older, we realized how important it is to have family nearby without giving up our independence.

We had actually been considering an ADU for almost four years. At one point, we decided against it and moved to South Carolina. But after living there, we realized just how much we missed our kids and grandkids. We found ourselves flying back to California three or four times a year, and after a few health scares, it became clear that being close to family was where we truly wanted to be.
